2 CH3CHOHCOO-  +  2H+  —> C6H12O6

Metabolism by oxidation of the remaining 30% of the lactate follows the equation:

CH3CHOHCOO-   +  H+  + 3O2  —>  3 CO2  +  3 H2O

The consumption of H+ in both of these reactions leaves an excess of OH- which is free to combine with CO2 to form bicarbonate
